A lot of people talk about how much they hate getting up in the morning and rushing off to their job. They may spend an hour on the freeway, only to find themselves stuck in traffic. By the time they get to their job, their boss is yelling and they’ve missed an important appointment. Sounds frustrating, huh? If you want to make a change in your life, you may want to take a look at a typical day in the life of an affiliate marketing associate. First of all, it’s eight o’clock in the morning and where is the affiliate marketing associate? Just rolling over, deciding that it might be time to get up. After strolling over to the coffee pot, they pour their first cup of the day and go out on the deck to enjoy the scenery, while they wake up. By nine o’clock, they’ve jumped in the shower and are now awake enough to see to their work. Looking at their calendar, the associate realizes there is nothing pressing on the schedule for the day and turns on their computer. He or she then sits down to check and respond to any emails that have come in. They log in to the first affiliate program to see if there are any changes or any new product updates. Once done, they move on the next, until they are done with the programs. By this time, it’s time for more coffee and a break. After coming back to work, they spend the rest of their day marketing the products they have chosen to sell. They visit a lot of social networking sites, forums, and discussion groups, as well as classified ad sites. Of course, they also get into a few conversations in these sites and can’t help but smile. After all, they may be working, but they are having fun. Six hours later, after a quick review of their financial documents, the affiliate decides they are done for the day and they shuts down his or her computer. Which scenario sounds the best to you? If you are one of the people that has spent years working for someone else who may not appreciate all your efforts, you may want to consider becoming an affiliate marketing associate. Not only will you find it financially rewarding, you might just find yourself having some fun and enjoying your work.

What is with all these applications available for Facebook? I keep getting invitations from friends to take quizzes and answer questionnaires and send plants and all kinds of things. Do I have to do these?A: No, you certainly don t, and I just ignore most of them, because I find them to be a waste of time, but if you have got time, some people find them fun, and some of them actually have a philanthropic benefit (e.g., a tiny amount may be donated to something worthwhile if you participate). If an application (they are called apps on Facebook) helps my functionality, however, then I take a more serious look at it. I ll mention some interesting and helpful apps below. Should I put my picture on Facebook? If so, do you have any suggestions about the photo quality or type?A. Since the purpose of participating in Facebook is to build community, having your picture makes you seem more real and more human. This can be especially important if you are trying to build your online brand or reputation. Many experts recommend getting a very good, business-casual, warm/friendly photo taken and use the same picture on all your social media sites so that you will become easily recognizable. Mari Smith, the Pied Piper of Facebook recommends taking your picture against a light background so that your hair does not fade into the background (especially if you are blond). Do not wear sunglasses, because your eyes help people get a feel for your personality. Crop out other people, pets and things, unless they are an important part of your image. It is okay to change your picture, but do not do it too often if you are building a business. Remember that even if you are only using Facebook for friends and family, if you have an online business, prospects and clients WILL look you up on Facebook, so your image there will be important too, like it or not. I write a blog and I d like to import it automatically into my Facebook. How do I do this?A: Go to the default Notes app here. Click on the import blog link. You can only import one blog using this app, so if you have more than one blog, you ll have to select your favorite. Do not forget to import your blog to your Fan Page too, if you have one. Once this is done, every time you post to your blog, it will appear on your Facebook page, where your Facebook friends can comment and spread information about your blog out through their own networks...Read more in International Association of Home Business Enterpreneurs (IAHBE). What kinds of things should I post in my Status Update Box (the one that says - What is On Your Mind?)? Some people seem to put such trivial things there.A: You have made an excellent observation. For anyone trying to build an online reputation or brand, this status box is one of the most powerful resources that Facebook offers, because anything you put there goes out to all your friends News Feeds. Therefore, you want to give thought to what you send out, and try to make it either meaningful or valuable, and preferably related to the area of expertise you are trying to establish. It is fine to alternate personal and business entries, since it helps people feel like they are getting to know you. Use a URL shortening tool such as http://bit.ly (which also provides tracking) when you include links in your messages. Try to avoid the extremes of boring trivia at one extreme and blatant self-promoting hype at the other. Be yourself always. Should I take time to comment on the things that other people post on Facebook?A: Well, it depends…think about how you feel if someone validates a comment you have made (on Facebook or elsewhere). It feels good. It lets you know that other person is paying attention to you, listening to you, and values whatever you have said. It is a way to let them know that they are on your radar screen and that you care enough about them to have noticed their entry. Having said that, if your comment would be negative, I d be careful. When you can not look someone in the eye while delivering a sarcastic or critical message, it sounds even harsher than you might mean for it to, so avoid this if possible. I ve got so many Facebook friends. How can I possibly keep up with all their posts so that I can comment on them?A: I just learned this great tip from -guess who-Mari Smith again. Put your Friends in different categories by creating Lists. When you click on the Friends tab at the top of Facebook, look on the page for Lists and then Create or Create a List. You can also create new lists by clicking on Friends in the left side of the page to pull up all your Friends, and after each one, there is a List column that tells you if they are already in a List and gives you the option of putting them in more than one list or not. For instance, I have a Family List, a Church List, a Close Friends List, a Business List and a Followed Contacts list. Some people are on more than one list. Now, here is the tip - when you click on your Home page, these lists will show up on the left side of the page. You can drag and drop them into whatever order, but if you drag the Followed Contacts one to the very top, above the News Feed, then every time you open Facebook, their entries will become your default view, so you can peruse them and make comments if you wish without having to browse through the news feeds of all your friends. At any time, you can click on any list (i.e., Family) to see what is going on with the people in that list....Read more in International Association of Home Business Enterpreneurs (IAHBE). © 2009 Elizabeth H. Researched by Elizabeth H. Cottrell The dream of being paid for having fun The entrepreneurial ideal, on paper, would be to take something you absolutely love to do—such as something you already do now for fun and no pay—and figure out how to turn it into a business. This idea is particularly alluring when you are something like a crafter, artist, amateur furniture maker or collector with the fruits of your labor accumulating in your basement or workshop and just calling out to you, “Sell me and help defray some of the cost of your hobby!” Many have been given a false sense of security about the prospects for turning their hobby into a business by well-meaning friends and relatives who were quick to compliment or praise them for their efforts. Facing Reality “Your friends and family may ooh and ahh over whatever it is you're doing, but when it gets down to the bottom line, will they get out their checkbooks and pay you to do more?” asks Jacqueline Lynn, writing for Entrepreneur.com. Before you decide to start a business with your hobby, you need to do the same due diligence and market research you’d do to check out any other business idea. Of course you need to do a business plan, and it should include asking yourself these questions: - Is there a real desire or need for what I want to do or produce?
- Is the demand sustainable and long term?
- Is there expansion potential?
- What is a realistic expectation for: start-up costs, overhead, and income?
- How can I be unique and make myself stand out from the competition?
- Will I ruin my enjoyment of this by turning it into a business?
- Am I committed enough to see this through?
- Do I have the self-discipline to be in business for myself?
- Am I able to make decisions about my business?
- Can I secure the financing to get my business off the ground?
- Do I like to sell (myself, my product/service)?
What Hobbies Would Make Good Businesses? This depends on you, your personality, your knowledge, your hobby, where you are located, and the market demand where you want to do business, so we can’t answer this question. The Internet has opened up a world or potential customers to anyone with access to it, however, so your options are infinitely greater than they were even ten years ago. J.D. Roth of Get Rich Slowly is a staunch believer in anyone’s ability to make at least a sideline income from their hobby. You’re more likely to keep on enjoying it if you don’t go into it full time. He suggests being creative and using a very broad definition of “hobby:” Roth turned his own love of writing and struggle with debt into a self-improvement project to educate himself about personal finance. He became passionate about it and created the Get Rich Slowly website. When he wrote the article cited below in 2007, he was making over $1,000 a month from it. He feels that being passionate about a hobby important to being successful at turning it into a money-maker. A friend of Roth’s who loves to cook turned her hobby into a custom catering business for a few wealthy clients for whom she plans and prepares week-long menus. Some people who like to travel have been able to subsidize their travel by writing travel articles, illustrated with their own photographs, and occasionally getting trips paid for. Consider charging others to teach them how to do your hobby, especially if you are really good at it. This can be anything from cake decorating to bird watching, from gardening to plant identification. People are hungry for knowledge, and they’re willing to pay for. A small group could generate a good hourly return for your time. Other ways we found that people were earning money from hobbies included: - Mystery shopping
- Belly dancing
- One-of-a-kind buttons
- Blank sketchbooks and journals from old library books
- Sewing
- Drawing/illustrating – sketches of people’s homes or pets, made into notecards or framed pictures
- Specialty cooking
- Making high precision gun sites
- Making leather handbags and accessories
- Making historical reenactment costumes and accessories
- Making specialty/customized products for horses
- Making specialty/customized products for dogs or cats
- Making customized pictures as baby gifts that incorporated the baby’s name
- Washing and drying horse blankets
- Exercising other people’s horses
- Walking other people’s pets
- Specialized photography: pets, children, horses
- Teaching computer lessons to elderly
Start-Up Suggestions Many who have been successful at turning their hobby into a business didn’t really start out to do that. They just got to be very good at what they were doing and then circumstances changed that either forced—or allowed—them to take the plunge. Whenever possible, start out on a small scale to test the waters. MaryBeth Reeves of launched ScrapBookMamma after years of making fabulous scrapbook creations for friends and family. She did it part time for some extra spending money until she was laid off, and that gave her the impetus to ramp things up. Be careful not to force things too much, or else you run the risk of taking all the fun out of what you currently love to do. While you want to be serious about you endeavor, you may not ever want to pursue it more than part time. Etsy.com is a good place to buy or sell anything handmade. Registration is free. Listing is only $.20 for each item listed, and there is a 3.5% sales fee (does not include shipping). Lulu.com is a good place to sell ebooks or other similar infoproducts that you have created. There’s no charge for set-up, no paper, no printing, and they offer a storefront so you don’t have to worry about credit cards, downloading or anything else. You can even set your own price. Lulu keeps a percentage fee before putting the rest in your account. Publishing packages are available for other types of books and published products. Treat it Like a Business If you want to be taken seriously, you must treat your business in a professional manner. This is important not only for your reputation, but also because the Internal Revenue Service will not let you deduct your hobby expenses as business expenses if they think you’re not really trying to make money. Here are some suggestions: - Get business cards with your business name and contact information.
- Open a separate checking account for your business.
- Get a separate credit card for your business.
- Keep excellent records and document all your business expenditures and their purpose.
- Join your local chamber of commerce or other appropriate professional organization.
Tax Considerations Here’s an excellent video that covers a lot of the important tax considerations for hobbies versus businesses: http://www.tax.gov/sbv_hobby/. It covers what expenses and losses can be deducted in both situations and when the IRS considers your endeavor a hobby and when it considers it a business. Unless you can show that you are actually running a business, the IRS will not let you deduct losses or any expenses other than those offset by income. There are, in fact, penalties, for doing so. It is not true that you have to be profitable for the IRS to consider that you are a business, but you do have to provide evidence that it is your intention to make a profit and that you are making a good faith effort to do so. For other small business issues as they related to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, visit http://www.irs.gov/smallbiz. Making Money versus Saving Money Here’s an interesting thought to end on. There are certain hobbies that require skills, knowledge, and tools that can save you a lot of money if they keep you from hiring other professionals to come to your house to provide service or make repairs. If you can repair your own furniture, screens, or glass; if you can do minor or major carpentry; if you can do wiring or electrical repairs; if you can fix engines or motors…simply figure out what you’d have to pay someone to come to your home to do these things or even to take something to be repaired. You might be surprised how much this could save you in a year’s time. Think of it as a raise that you don’t have to declare on your income tax return! Elizabeth H. from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can EditAn online business is a business that is run via the internet. These businesses may include retailing, outsourcing of services, reselling of items of your own or other companies/people's products, being an infopreneur and many others. Finding an online business that you can make money from may require you to create a website that advertises your business and items, registering yourself on certain websites or forums where you can advertise your services and finding clients from the rather huge world of the internet. Contents Steps Choose Your Focus - Identify your area of expertise. Do you have any information that others will benefit from?
- Write down some keywords that you will be using on your website and check out the demand for your keywords using the many keyword tools available.
- Use to determine the Google supply(the number of websites that are built around those keywords) for your keywords.
- Determine profitability of your keywords using the formula 'Demand number/Supply number'.
- Research what people are looking for and buying online by going to different forums, Google Trends, Ebay.com and www.amazon.com and places like www.ezinearticles.com and look at their top sellers or articles. Find a niche that looks interesting and do more research. Think about what and why people buy things online.
- The goal of all of your research is to come up with a business idea that people are interested as compared to just starting a business that you want to create.
- Knowing what you can easily offer people online and what business you can successfully run and make money out of is the first step in running an online business. After determining this, you will need to come up with a plan for the execution of your business idea. You may start with hiring a programmer to create your website for you or you can create your own website if you are capable of doing so or take a class in how to create an online business.
- Create a list of keywords and plan your pages according to what people are looking for. You will need to learn how to create an optimized website that gets found by the search engines.
- You will also need to find hosting for your website as well as to register your domain name. Your domain will depend on finding the best keywords that describe what solution you provide. You will need to research webhosting and website design and see if you can do it yourself or if you need to hire someone. Most hosting is just hosting and you will need to know how to create a website. There are companies out there that can teach you how to build an online business.
- You will need to learn about what it takes to get the website found by the search engines and how to get traffic to it. It is fairly straight forward but can take some time to implement. It will include a plan of getting backlinks and creating content based on the keyword research you have done on your business topic.
Create an Online Presence - Build a content website for your profitable keywords which overdelivers to the user that you are targeting. Remember an Internet user is looking for information and not sales talk. So use your content to show them your expertise in your area. Write your content in such a way that your user stays and browses through your site instead of hitting the 'back' button. Write just how you talk for the most part. Talk to your user through your content and pre-sell to them the product you want to sell - information/product/your offline business etc. Pre-selling using content builds confidence in your user.
- Monetize your site. Use Google Adsense and/or Yahoo Publisher Network on your site to monetze. Follow some easy to follow tips given by google for posting adsense ads on your site, that will make you money. Find affiliate programs that are compatible with your business topic and promote them to your readers.
Finance your Endeavor - Research and select an online payment processing service so that you can provide your customers with a wide array of payment options, such as credit card,e-wallets PayPal, or even bank transfers.
- Use other ways of monetizing as well if you are not an entrepreneur.
- Use article marketing to start promoting affiliate products without having a website to fund your website business. This can be an online business in it self.
Miscellaneous - Find a mentor, the person who has a good success system to follow!
- Find a direct sales model. It's the fastest way to break-even.
Tips - Find a business system that has been proven successful.
- A thing that needs to be ironed out for your online business is your billing service. While there are businesses that may bill their clients directly after a contract has been agreed upon and signed and these bills are paid for through checks that are deposited into the service provider's bank account, there are some clients who require a certain online billing system for them to pay for the services they have contracted. You may need to register with a billing system like Paypal for your online business to make billing and payment easier and less of a hassle to you and your clients.
- Putting up an online business may be easy or hard, depending upon whether you did your research well and laid down all the groundwork before you began. You can make money out of an online business if you execute the necessary steps and do not miss out on some of the essentials that are needed for an online business to succeed.
Warnings - Watch out for website hosting and building services that do not handhold you through the process of building an e-commerce website.
- Keep in mind that it is a business. Learn from your failures but also the success of others. Be a willing and eager student.
- Never give out your money to anyone to show you how to make money. Please be very cautious before spending a penny.
- Paypal is limited as a payment processor because when people use their debit/credit cards through them they lose the ability to get refunds directly.
Things You'll Need - A Website with a domain name that you can acquire from a website hosting service.
- A good training system to follow with step by step details.
- It is much more profitable to outsource when you are beginning to start an internet business. This will insure that you have experts doing the work for you instead of you trying to figure it all out.

Freedom The main benefit of joining network marketing businesses is that it allows you more personal freedom. You get to decide what you want to do and just how far you take your business. Spend More Time Doing What You Want Instead of spending an hour or more each day commuting to work, you get to spend more time doing what you want. When you work for someone else, you make a time commitment to them and it must be fulfilled or you do not get paid. Be Your Own Boss One of the best things about joining network marketing businesses is that you get to be your own boss. You will make all of the choices in your business and no one will be looking over your shoulder to make sure it is done. While this can add another type of stress to your life, you will find it is much more enjoyable than to live by someone else’s rules. Work Wherever You Want Want to take an unexpected week off from work to go fishing with your buddies or to a spa with your friends? Do it. You do not have to put in a vacation request form a month in advance. You can work whenever you want to and if you want two weeks off, it is your choice. Flexibility of Hours You also will find you have no set hours when you work in this business. You can get up in the morning, work a few hours, take the rest of the day off, and put in a few more hours at night. You have a flexibility that no one else has and if you choose to work at home, you can do this or go to the local cyber café to get some work done. The Internet can be the best thing that ever happened to your business, but it can also be the worst. Starting an Internet retail business isn't difficult, but maintaining one is. It's easy to get lost among the millions of websites out there and if you do, there is no way you will succeed. Building a reputation online is the most important thing you can do for your Internet retail business. It can make the difference between a business success and a business failure. The single most important thing you need for your Internet retail business is a website with a secure checkout. Your website needs to have a lot of things, but most importantly, you need a name people will remember. Something catchy that just begs for people to visit. Your website should also be uncluttered, easy to navigate, and clearly list your business contact information. Not having these things can make people leery of your business. Internet ad placement is also important. You will want to advertise your business on websites that already have a lot of traffic, but not just any website. You want a website that people in your target market will most likely visit. You can also look into advertising on forums and blogs. Sometimes bloggers will even write a review for you if you provide them with a free sample product. Any of these options can lead to a lot of traffic. Making sure you advertise on the right sites, will bring you traffic from your target market. The success of your new Internet retail business depends on how well you get your name out there and your company recognized. If you can master these skills, there's no reason your business can't succeed online. The Internet can be your top salesperson if you take the time to make it work for you.
